euro book update/mollino

I've been dying - seriously dying - to share some of the images I shot in Europe for my next book. So today, I gave myself leave to do so because I am excited! I have news!
But first things first! This is an image from Carlo Mollino's kitchen. I figured this was ok to share because this most likely won't make it in. It is a room still used so not exactly in tact. But I still love it. It was a rainy day when I was there in May, so the light was just nice and soft. I love the two little weights hanging down in the window. At least I think they are weights.
OK, so on to the news. I am just about to head out on the road again - back over to Europe for the rest of the shoots for my book. This will be the bigger trip. I am seriously pinching myself by some of the emails I have received from these amazing houses and people. I am always surprised when people know my book in Europe because it was not really distributed there. Grateful. Honored. Surprised. This week has been an onslaught of YES! I love it! The trip looks like this: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and the UK. I think that covers it. And while on the road I will be doing some super good People Watching posts for the NYTimes. I hope you all come along for the ride.

Peeking through the dividing wall into Charles Bello's kitchen. Really pretty morning light in there. More on Charles here.

kitchen/

I have been staring at this image tonight for a good long while marveling at how much is going on here. A kitchen like this would never be built now. Is it all original or were things added, like that decorative trim to the upper cabinets? What about the caning on the doors that go under the sink? It kind of stupefies me. That green line in the tile is perfect, though.
I am returning here to shoot today and really looking forward to it. Everyday this week has been  barrage of emails in relation to planning the new book in Europe. Tickets are booked, the first month is scheduled and I am in talks with about 6 or 7 more houses. but wow...endless emails...
The thought that I get to take some pictures is the best thought on the planet. Yay!!!

ray kappe/kitchen

I mentioned last week I was looking through all my images of kitchens. I really love the quality of light in this one of Ray Kappe's kitchen.  All the window and skylight placement in his home is really phenomenal, not to mention his use of electric blue with avocado accents. Even the apron is the right blue...

How would you like to cook here everyday? Yeah...me too. Sorry I can't give you more details on this one. You are just going to have to wait a bit.

erica tanov, berkeley, ca

finally tackling the backlog of shoots I have to edit through. I shot fashion designer, Erica Tanov's beautiful home in Berkeley last October, right before the book was released. This morning, I was finally looking through them and I ran across this one. I really like her kitchen. No surprise that she has beautiful objects, but that blue science lab counter really makes the room for me. And I love the jumble of cups from the mornings coffee. true to life.

kahn's esherick house/

Awhile back I had the opportunity to photograph Louis Kahn's Esherick House in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I knew of the house and had seen beautiful pictures of it, but I was mostly interested in the kitchen. Wharton Esherick had done all the kitchen cabinets, etc. for his niece (whose house it was). I have stared at this image a lot and have debated whether or not to put it up. What is it a picture of really? yet I am still staring at it. So here it is. Tell me your thoughts on this one.
