Thought I would continue on with images I shot of Louis Kahn's Esherick House. This is one of my favorites but I could not get that screen down all the way on the lower right window...and how I tried!

Love it, Leslie. What's the story here? Did Kahn design the house, and then Esherick did the cabinetry and millwork? What an odd pairing.
ReplyDeleteThe open screen provides a kind of imperfect tension. I like it.

ReplyDeletemd - actually Louis Kahn and Wharton Esherick were great friends. In fact they collaborated on Eshericks workshop on his property near Valley Forge. His daughter, Ruth lives in that structure now with her husband.
ReplyDeleteI believe you are right in regards to the Kahn Esherick House. Kahn was commissioned for the house, but his niece (who would live in the house) asked her uncle Wharton to do the kitchen. But I agree 100%. Stylistically, the oddest pairing in modern architecture, but it just makes them both more interesting...
