the last NYT People Watching/Carina Seth Andersson outtakes

I've been meaning to post some outtakes of Carina Seth Andersson from my People Watching post for the NYTimes so finally today here are a few. This will be my last People Watching post I am sad to say. There are big changes afoot at T Style online and that includes moving away from columns. So I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to my editors, Julia Felsenthal and Jane Herman Bishop who helped to make the column into something I will always be proud of. And of course a special thanks to all of you for following and sending kind and encouraging emails, comments, etc. People Watching sprang out of what I was doing already - namely finding people whose work I admire and basically inviting myself over to meet them - and I will continue to do just that. I find so much joy in it and even more in sharing these people with all of you. So maybe they will be posted here on my blog, or maybe they will be elsewhere. I have toyed with the idea of doing a one off magazine of all the wonderful people I have shot that have never been seen...there are so many possibilities! So we'll see...
For now, I am happily writing my new book and prepping a Kickstarter campaign that will post in the first weeks of 2013 to help me to finish that book. Lots of amazing things are on the horizon. So a deep and grateful thank you. I hope your holidays are filled with love, beauty and time with those that are dearest to you.
Kisses from California!

carina seth andersson/nyt.people watching

I'm so happy my new NYT People Watching has finally posted! There was a bit of a delay with all the holiday and Design Miami coverage. But I think it is completely worth it because it is posting on 12.12.12!

Without further ado, meet Carina Seth Andersson!

my converse/

Just a quickie post today. I am sequencing the Bruno Mathsson chapter so I don't want to break away from that for too long. But I ran across this image and it makes me laugh. If you guys only knew how many pictures I have of my Converse. I lie on a lot of floors. Ha!

bruno mathsson, sweden

A bit more from Bruno Mathsson HQ in Varmano, Sweden today.
The thing that I found the most fascinating during my visit were these two chairs. The first is what we know Mathsson for. The second is the first chair Mathsson ever made. But here is the thing I STILL marvel over. He made these two chairs only one year apart. Talk about a stylistic leap...
On another note, I have decided in honor of Thanksgiving I am going to give you all a little sneak preview from my new book. Not from my phone...the real deal. So tomorrow or Friday...
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! xx

bruno mathsson/sweden

My trip to Sweden a couple months ago was a very fruitful one, but my main reason for being there was to photograph Bruno Mathsson's home for my new book. During my lunch break I made a visit to the Bruno Mathsson International, where his offices were and where the company is still run from. There is a nice little archive...

editing/bruno mathsson

I am in the thick of editing the new book now. This apparently means that my blog posts will be more sporadic than daily. There is just no way to do it all! At this second, I am editing Bruno Mathsson and I can hear myself cursing under my breath. His house is so damn amazing that I am barely editing anything out!  At this rate there will be a year of Bruno Mathsson outtakes. haha!
Here is a teaser. I'll do a couple of juicy posts next week.
Have a great weekend friends!

julia kalthoff/nyt.people watching/outtakes

Outtakes today from my NYT People Watching post on Julia Kalthoff of Wetterlings Swedish Axe Works in Sweden. Editing is so heartbreaking sometimes. Glad I can share more images with you all here. I posted the second image before, but it is seriously my favorite image from the entire day. It may be one of my all time favorite pictures...

waiting.../bruno mathsson

I am sitting at home in SF waiting for the Fedex guy and so I figured I might as well start editing all the shoots from the new book. Where did I decide to start? Bruno Mathsson. There are so many places in his house I wish I could curl up at this very moment.  Of course then I would miss my Fedex delivery at home. Wishing I could be two places at once seems to be a theme since I have returned to San Francisco. What does it mean when being on the road feels more at home than actually being at home? I am still processing it all.
Have a lovely weekend friends. Be back next week...

storvik/sweden

Just editing through some images I shot out in the Swedish countryside. This is a favorite. More on this place soon.
Today I leave Milan and head to London. Looking forward to a week off from shooting. I need a little break!

note from helsinki/one month in...

Just arrived in Helsinki for what will be a whirlwind Alvar Aalto extravaganza. What does that mean? It means I fly in, shoot Aalto's house for two days and immediately fly out. C'est la vie. I get two amazing days that most people don't ever get...the fact that I will have to make a return trip to experience the design history of Finland is OK by me.
But today I realized I have been traveling for a month. I am a little under half way through my trip, but I still feel like I have so much to do! And amazing opportunities just keep coming out of the woodwork. A lead on an interesting house in Sweden, a possibility that Josef Hoffman's house (that he built for himself) in Austria might be available to shoot...with a little persistence. To steal a line from Charlie Brown "Aaaugh!" I want to shoot them all!
It has gotten to a point where I just try and concentrate on the opportunities that move me. Of course, I have also noticed the more tired I am, the less I am moved! : ) I guess that is typical.
Another shot from Skägga today. Perfect, no?

skägga summer house/sauna

If I could transport myself somewhere right this second it would be here. With this weather (rain all day in Vienna makes this stipulation obligatory). And the second image would be my view.
Off to Helsinki tomorrow to shoot Alvar Aalto's House! I am super excited even though it is supposed to rain there too...

skägga summer house/sweden

Thought I would post some lovely, relaxing images of this amazing summer house I was lucky enough to visit during my stay in Sweden a few weeks back. Frankly, I have so many beautiful pictures of this land I don't know where to start so I am toying with the idea of posting a couple over the weekend and through the holiday (it is a holiday on Monday in the US, right?)
My friend Harald, who invited me here, referred to it as being a "bit like eating Sweden in concentrated form." If this is the case, I'm sold. The family who has had this place for generations is just beginning to produce little pieces for everyone in the form of honey and possibly (hopefully!) apple candy from the many orchards there. If you find some honey that is called Öster Skägga Gård, snatch it up and have a spoonful of Sweden for yourself.
I'll share the images of the House another time, but just some of the land and swimming house, sauna etc. for now.
Have a beautiful weekend friends. I am heading to Helsinki on Sunday and Copenhagen Wednesday, but I'll do my best to keep posting!

favorite picture I took today/gustavsberg, sweden

Ok, there are two favorites, both from my visit to an amazing glass artist out in Gustavsberg, Sweden. I cannot wait to talk more about her because I am in love with her work. But People Watching has first dibs on that, so it will have to wait. But I can share a couple of iphone shots.
Tomorrow I go out to the Swedish countryside to see a girl about an ax!!!

bruno mathsson office/sweden

A quick shot I took yesterday of the Bruno Mathsson office in Varnamo, Sweden. I was shooting his house there for the new book and at lunch I made a quickie trip to the Mathsson Design Office. The company is still run by the sons of Mathsson's original business partner - another family run, multi generational business! Much like Mathsson, who was the 6th generation in a family of cabinet mankers. You cannot tell here, but the IBM typewriter matched the color of the chair exactly! So good!
