american craft Q&A/

Just wanted to let you all know there is a really nice feature story on me and a Q&A about my work and some of my unseen projects in the Feb/March issue of American Craft. It should be hitting newsstands now. You can link to the online article here.
This image is from Paul Loebach's studio. I really wanted it in the story, but it didn't make so...here you go! I have become obsessed with the combination of copper and pink since I shot this. So good!

note from milano/salone del mobile 2012

At this point in my travels (it will be one month tomorrow), I am feeling like I have a mountain of editing to do. If not Everest, a modest Mt. Kilimanjaro. I finally edited through all my favorites from the Salone a couple of weeks ago. So here it goes...
The first three are from the Studio Nendo show I loved so much at Palazzo Visconti. As you can see it was soooo well done.
And the next couple were from up/market. That first of the door I was just in love with the door knob...how good is that? And the second is work by Simone Berti, and Italian artist and sculptor. And the last two by a couple of favorite designers of mine - Lindsey Adelman's candlesticks and chandelier at the Wallpaper show and Paul Loebach's vertical chandelier at the Carwan Gallery.

paul loebach/

Two of my favorite portraits from my shoot at Paul Loebach's studio earlier this week. The first one was shot when it was practically dark and it is on my new camera (which I have a tenuous relationship thus far) so there may be hope for my new little digi filly yet! It captured the light rather well and in really (really, really) low light conditions.
The second image is step one of an experiment I have been wanting to do for quite possibly years...based on a Giacometti drawing. I really like the economy of Paul's body language in this and the matter of fact expression on his face. I am kicking myself for not seeing the damn roll of paper towels, though...so irritating!
Alas, can't wait to see the images I shot on film!

paul loebach/west elm

Another of my images from Paul Loebach's studio in Brooklyn today because his collaboration with West Elm is now available and it looks so great!  I noticed this grey chair in his studio, but wasn't sure what the story was behind it...a prototype maybe? I tend to be an intense observer when I am shooting, really involved in the seeing, but not always wanting to ask about things. And sometimes the answers just reveal themselves to me - like this chair - which is from the WE collection.
I love it when things just appear to you unexpectedly. It is life telling me I am doing the right thing, shooting the right places, following the right path. Everything in my life is like this more and more...I really love it! It tells me to keep going!

ps - I just noticed Paul's new website is up! Check it out and begin to covet his work as I do. http://paulloebach.com/

paul loebach/brooklyn

Spent another day shooting at Paul Loebach's studio yesterday for my new project. Always such a fun day discovering what he is thinking of and designing. This is a shot from last time I was there in late July. More on him soon!

paul loebach/brooklyn

As I mentioned awhile back (or did I?), I have been shooting furniture designer, Paul Loebach's studio in Brooklyn for a new project on craftsmen and women. This is one of my favorites images from the last visit. There is a lot going on in his studio but then there are quiet areas as well. This I would consider one of those. I am curious what the two little balsa wood configurations are in the upper right. I guess I should inquire, but I am enjoying wondering what they are...if I ever inquire (yes, I know I should), I'll let you know. But you should all enjoy the wondering, too. Sometimes not knowing leads you to so many amazing places in your own mind...
Enjoy the long weekend my friends. And happy July! My favorite month!!!

sight unseen popup/paul loebach

Last image from the Sight Unseen pop up and I saved the best for last. On the second floor  (or was it the third?) in the back was a nice pairing of Lindsey Adleman's lighting and some new pieces by Paul Loebach. You can read about them here. I was kind of stunned by Loebach's Can table and light. Somehow his work taps into unexcavated memories for me. This one was of old klieg lights laying around in my grandfather's garage - and place of wonder for me as a child. I am not sure what his inspiration was and his material is shockingly bent wood, but the shape is SO klieg light from old hollywood films. Beautiful.

paul loebach/brooklyn

Thought I would finish out the week with a wide shot of Paul Loebach's studio in Bed-Stuy. The day I was there Paul's interns, Sammy and Fiona, were working on getting things ready to send to Milan for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. He is showing at Ventura Lambrate @ the Carwan Gallery. If you are lucky enough the be going to Milan this year, pop by and tell Paul I sent you.
Have a great weekend everyone!

paul loebach/brooklyn

A couple more shots from Paul Loebach's studio in Brooklyn. I think of all his designs, this ladder is the one I want for myself. It was inspired by 19th century orchard ladders. I love it. I would do away with my towel bar in the bathroom and use this instead.

paul loebach/brooklyn

During my trip to nyc the past few weeks, I was lucky enough to fit in a visit to Paul Loebach's studio. I have been following his work for awhile in hopes of including him the the American Craftsmen Project.
I guess you could call him a furniture designer, but that doesn't seem to really cover it adequately. He designed the shelf, vase and candlesticks you see in this image. I really like the way his brain works. He seems to take a material or concept and just push it farther than you think it could go and to stunning effect. I still marvel at this wood shelf. Yes, that is wood. It looks almost like it has been squeezed out of a tube, don't you think? I'm really looking forward to returning to his studio next month to photograph in more detail for the project. If you aren't familiar with his work, you should definitely check out his website.
