Sometimes I love to drive at night. Everything looks different...the city turns into some scene from a movie I saw years ago. There is a romance to it that I never notice in the daytime.

volume, inc./
The guys over at Volume, Inc. designed my forthcoming book (and did an amazing job...). Last week I was over at their offices seeing the last bit of corrections from the printer and I snapped this pic really quick on my iphone. Gorgeous light...

handcrafted modern/outakes/john kapel
Since my book, Handcrafted Modern, and my blog were mentioned today on the Bureau of Friends blog, I thought I would post a little peek into my forthcoming book. This is an image from John Kapel's home in Woodside, CA. Every stick of furniture you see Kapel designed and most likely made in his basement workshop. Truly a beautiful place.

heath ceramics/la studio
Shot this image awhile back at Heath Ceramics in LA. I dream of owning one of these lamps by Adam Silverman. They remind me of lava rocks...or maybe the surface of the moon. There is something primal about them.

light
The remains of an old schoolhouse in PA. I love the light (both the hanging bulb and the light coming in the window.)

brooklyn heights loft/
I was sifting through scouting pics the other day, planning my trip to NY in September. There are a couple of really great places I am going to shoot and this is one of them (more details later). I love this shot of Sasha streaking across the frame...

icons of design @ sfmoma/
I was at SFMOMA and walked into this room with all the iconic wood chairs...JB Blunk, Eames, Rietveld, Aalto...seriously
gorgeous. I was so impressed with the 75th anniversary show, but this room is my absolute favorite.

This is a little obsession of mine. I am in love with they way graffiti is painted over in varying shades of the same color paint. One literally drives by this all the time, but people rarely notice how beautiful they are. I have been shooting these for years...usually with my iPhone. This is a favorite, I think because it is painted on metal, so they just use any old gray. The result is beautiful.

june schwarcz/a bit of morandi
For the past two days I have been photographing enamel artist, June Schwarcz's home for the new project on craftspeople in America. There are so many images to edit through, but I knew this image was going to be a favorite when I shot it. It makes me think of Giorgio Morandi...

june schwarcz/
Today and tomorrow I am photographing enamel artist June Schwarcz and her home for my new project on American Craftspeople. I shot this in the hallway today and both June and I were just marveling at the light. I love the way the glass in the picture frames are reflecting that spot of sun on the door...

my morning walk/fort miley
I love this area off the trail near Land's End and Fort Miley. Isn't it gorgeous in a weird, ominous way? The light in there is incredible every time I walk by. I will shoot a portrait here soon. Can't wait!

j.b. blunk residency/mariah
I have been shooting a lot last week for the j.b. blunk residency. It is actually really exciting for me because of all the houses I shot for Handcrafted Modern, this is one of the only houses that I have been able to have a relationship with beyond the original shoot. I have been documenting how the house changes with each artist that is in residency here during the year. Today Mariah, the director of the residency, needed a portrait. I love this one in particular. More from these shoots at the residency this week.

the american south/on the gulf in biloxi
This was shot pre-Katrina. I heard it was devastated down there after Katrina hit, especially this area. It sure was beautiful when I shot this...
Happy Independence Day everyone.
