sight unseen popup/icff

A couple of weeks ago I was in nyc for the annual furniture fair, icff. While the actual show was not super exciting to me, I really enjoyed the Sight Unseen Popup shop. So I'm going to share a few of my favorites over the next couple of days. In this image, Brendan Ravenhill's work. Not sure who did the lighting in the foreground. Anyone know?

miller house/outtake

One more from the Miller House - this one in the kitchen. Xenia LOVED her dinnerware, apparently. Although it is not as full as it was when she was alive, you can see an example of her teapot collection here. There were venetian glasses and some wonderful original Alexander Girard designed plates as well in the collection.

miller house/outtake

A view of the Miller's master bath. Xenia collected this blue glass (it is literally all over the house) and I love the way Girard picked up on the exact color in the curtains. Not sure if this is one of his textiles or not. I believe the color of the curtains changed with the warmer months as it did in the conversation pit (the color scheme of the pillows changed bi-annually).

miller house/outtake

This is the view into one of the girl's bedrooms from the playroom, which was also Xenia's office, I believe. Their bedrooms were all identical except for the color scheme and all rather small - a bit like dormitory bedrooms.

the miller house/outtakes

More outtakes from the Miller House is Columbus Indiana this week. I've heard this was the first "conversation pit" ever. Not really sure if that is accurate or not. When the Millers were getting older they had the cushions made thicker so they could more easily get up and down from the couch. The original cushions were far thinner than the ones you see here.

I-5/

Tuesday I woke up in NYC. Wednesday I woke up in LA. And today I woke up in San Francisco. It has been a bit of a blur, frankly. But yesterday, to get my bearings, I drove home from LA along the I-5. So many people are bewildered when I say I love the I-5. Well, yesterday it was easy to understand why. Absolutely breathtaking scenes out my windows the entire ride. I had to stop and shoot 5 times.

the miller house/outtakes

A different view in the master bedroom of the Miller House.
I love the Wegner sewing table and the coffee table is actually custom designed by Alexander Girard, with inlays of butterflies in the black marble.

the miller house/outtakes

I think this is my favorite room at the Miller House - the master bedroom. I really didn't want to leave it. The view was incredible and it had a lovely sitting area. I even liked the very Alexander Girard touch of the dolls above the headboard.

a couple more images from the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. These are from the boys room. I love the little Fornasetti table in the second image.

the miller house/outtakes

as promised, a few of my favorite images from the Miller House in Columbus Indiana starts today. This is actually the front door. But you can see the series of sky lights here and get a sense of the beautiful luminous quality of the house. I thought it would be cold in the house, but the terrazzo floor has radiant heat so I padded around in my socks for most of the time I was there because it was more comfortable for me. I made myself at home a little bit I guess.
Check out more of the article I shot and wrote in the May issue of Dwell or here on Dwell's website.

charles bello/

The first structure I saw when I was visiting Charles Bello up in the redwoods last week was this one. This is the gallery he recently completed for his artwork. Isn't it exquisite? Of course, all these sculptures are his as well. He only made one drawing of his idea for this gallery before he set about building it. I can't really get my head around that.

a sweet little shot from my time in the redwoods last week. It really speaks to a simpler way of life, don't you think?

janet hankinson/landscape designer

A couple of details that I love from landscape designer, Janet Hankinson's house. A vintage landscape surveyor instrument sits on her sunporch with her work boots. And in her backyard, big bottles of wine she and her husband brewed years ago are sit next to her house.

Just a quick note. I am on location in the boonies for a couple of days. no internet, possibly no electricity. Should be fascinating! I'll tell you all about it when I get back.

spring/

I've had the pleasure of photographing Janet Hankinson's garden over the past month. Last Friday I got a bit carried away with these cherry blossoms. I love these two images, though.
Check out Janet's work here. She is an amazing landscape architect.
