chairs/john kapel

I am a bit preoccupied by chairs right now. I know it is because I am getting ready to sell one of my absolute favorites (a vintage PK-9), but still, it has made me reflect on this crazy love. None of my chairs match. I just got crushes on them and they ended up coming home with me. But they all co-habitate very nicely at the table.
These images  are of some of John Kapel's latest creations. The last shot is of John's chair room, where he keeps all his prototypes - another outtake from HCMod.

louis kahn/esherick house

A couple more from Louis Kahn's Esherick House. This is the chimney. It makes a really lovely cast shadow on the wood opposite. So pretty...

louis kahn/esherick house

I saw a picture awhile back of a Shaker interior and it got me thinking about these images I shot of the Kahn's Esherick house is PA. Today I finally layed eyes on them again (after quite some time) and I am wondering what I never shared more of these with you all...
Such an amazing house and the wood details are just damn gorgeous. So here are a couple to tie you over through the weekend...kisses my friends!

handcrafted modern/outtake/eames

For some reason I have been thinking about Ray Eames a lot. I'm not sure why...but it made me go back and look at all my Eames images. So here is another outtake from the Eames house. I love how everything is an opportunity for arrangement chez Eames  - even the kitchen counter.

I do love a good workshop. Ran across these two shots and had to share. I especially like all the ropes...maybe that ties in (no pun intended?) to my obsession with nautical knots?

location scouting/

Last Friday I was scouting for a shoot I am doing today and I shot this image just for me. The funny thing is I didn't even notice the camper when I shot it. That is one of those little gifts from the photo gods. I was enamored with the red and the reflection of blue from the laundromat, and the look of the closed sign through the frosted window. But let's face it, the camper makes the shot!

Looking forward to shooting the Janezic Fall 2011 Look Book today. Maybe you'll get a sneak peek soon!

nostalgia/the sounds of summer

Another image from my photographic past that I shot in Sharon, GA. I ran across this yesterday and it just made me crave the sound of cicadas and the feel of summer heat on my skin. San Francisco has been a bit chilly lately (typical July/August weather). But the heat is secondary to my craving for the sounds of summer. I feel like I haven't heard a cricket chirp in a year. Just thinking of those sounds makes me a bit wistful.
Have a great weekend friends! Hope you experience a bit of summer wherever you happen to be.

nostalgia/

Isn't it always the way... I have been asking all the people in my craftsmen project to go through all their stuff from the past...basically looking at their entire careers and pulling out important things for me to shoot.
Yesterday, my sister and I descended on my Dad's house to clean out underneath his house. (I was elected to go under the house with all the dust, cobwebs and black widows - oh the joy!) I had no idea what I would be going through was my entire artistic life. In the dustiest of boxes that we excavated from underneath there was almost every significant piece of art I have done in my life. Every bit of graphic design work I did in high school,  so many of my first forays into photography and even my entrance portfolio for Art Center were there to peruse. It was rather humbling...
So I am continuing in the same spirit now that I am back home. I have been looking at some of my past work from older versions of my website. This image is one of my favorites from one of my road trips through the South. It is actually in an old slave cabin on a plantation in Louisiana...kind of depressing, I know. But that window light...

anya jindrich/jewelry

A few weeks ago I traveled up north to Mendocino county for a couple of shoots and on my way home I had to visit Anja Jingrich. Luckily she said yes when I contacted her. She designs and makes beautiful pieces of jewelry out of wood and she happens to have designed my favorite necklace as of late. I wear it all the time and I am convinced the love and meticulous attention she puts into each piece just seeps into me somehow. I feel calmer when I wear it. She sands each piece by hand. They are simple and understated and let the beauty of the wood be the focus. My necklace has delicately sanded edges on the underside and I find myself constantly holding it and rubbing those edges...like I said, calming. Her work is only available at the General Store in San Francisco.

my carry on priorities/

After I arrived in NY last week, I was unpacking my carry on and I just had to laugh at myself. I realized that my carry on priorities are little outside of the norm.
The most important items I shot so I could share.
Here is the list:
1 box of collected California ephemera (driftwood, river rocks, a redwood chunk) for a friend who is working on an art piece.
1/2 loaf of Tartine bread
my personal mix of Nopalito fried garbanzo beans and marcona almonds
a bag of organic plums
1 slice of double chocolate tea cake
Ha! What an odd bird I am! In my defense, I had a shoot the next day and I was worried I would forget to eat (which I did the last time I shot at this location) so I was covering myself. And there was 4 pro-packs of film for the shoot. of course. What I didn't anticipate was the fine mess of flour and California dirt that would be on the bottom of my bag. Well worth it.
